Milestone in the Bahrain Refinery project

16/11/2006

A service visit in September, by Cafco International, marked the half way point in the supply and application of the company’s Fendolite MII passive fire protection system to the massive Bahrain Petroleum Refinery Company (BAPCO) Low Sulphur Diesel Project.

Fendolite MII, a single package factory controlled premix, based on vermiculite and Portland cement is specifically formulated for use on structures and vessels in the oil, gas, petrochemical and power industries. When applied to steel it produces a protective coating able to provide up to 240 minutes fire resistance and will withstand the effects of real hydrocarbon fire events.

Fendolite M11 is being applied by contractor RB Hilton Bahrain and Roofing & Insulation Co Ltd (Tasqeef) both on-site and off-site. Japanese engineering company JGC Corporation is the Prime Contractor, with CCC Consolidated Contractors International Company acting as Construction Manager.

The refinery project is one of the largest in the Middle East and the longest running in the GCC (Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf). It produces more than 250,000 barrels a day and has storage capacity of over 14 million barrels. About one-sixth of its crude originates from the Bahrain Field; the remainder is pumped from Saudi Arabia in pipelines extending 27 kilometers over land and a further 27 kilometers under the sea before reaching the northwest of Bahrain. 95% of its output is exported to the Middle East, India, the Far East, South East Asia and Africa. BAPCO, wholly owned by the Government of Bahrain, is also engaged in the exploration, prospecting, drilling and distribution of petroleum products and natural gas.

Cafco’s service facilities, both in Europe and Middle East, have been extensively utilised at the project for the past three years as part of the front end engineering design (FEED) and engineering procurement and construction (EPC) stages of the project.

Fendolite M11, which has been repeatedly specified by BAPCO for more than three decades, has become the primary means of ensuring the necessary fire protection on the refinery’s structures and vessel supports.
